Finding a job is a job

Now that you are unemployed you do have a job. That job is to find a job. In good times, it is a job seekers market. In bad times, it turns into an employers market. You need to spend time and effort on getting hired. You might even need more than one resume and should look to cater resumes to the job that you are applying for. Some resumes will be one page with a brief outline of you work history, education and skills or abilities. A lot of state government jobs want in depth details as they grade your application and/or resume to see if you have the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job functions. They actually give points for what you claim you possess that will be beneficial to them. Do not embellish on your KSA's. If you do and you get caught you will never get a job with the company that you are applying with.

Plan on working 8 hour days for your job search. Look for jobs online, in the local papers and check with job centers as well as your local, state and federal government positions. Almost all employers now list jobs online.
An attitude that won't quit

You are qualified for a job. Just out of college? Have less than a high school diploma? Your only job has been delivering pizza? It doesn't matter. You can find a job. In trying economic times, we have to not be concerned with what the job may be, we have to find a job that earns you money just to get through until the times are better. Remember this, things will improve. I'm not saying try for some pie in the sky job that you are not qualified for. You can't become a college professor with a high school education.
You have to be realistic. As the economy gets worse, a lot of higher paying jobs disappear. That is the hard reality of a recession. It is not an insult to land a job that you are overqualified for in tough economic times. Find a job and keep looking for a better one while you build up a solid reference. Treat any job as if it was one of the most important jobs in the world. I have a friend that worked for years as a buyer for a major law firm. She lost her job and had to take a job in a fast food restaurant to support herself and her children. For the first time in her life, she had to get on a food stamp and Medicaid program for her children. She has not lost her sense of direction and still knows what she want to do with her life. Her attitude is that she will do what she has to do...for now. When the economy turns, she will use the job as a reference and explain that she lost her job of 11 years and had to do whatever she could to make ends meet.

Cater the application to the job applied for. Stress what would best help the employer to take a second look at your application. If you are applying for an office manager job and have experience as such, then stress that experience. The fact that you were a security guard in 1996 will not be as impressive as you being a manager at an office for 3 years. While you may still list the security guard position, the employer will be much more interested in your former office manager job.

Looking for jobs and making resumes and filling out application will be time consuming but catering these to the job that you want to be a candidate for will be well worth the time and extra effort.

What do you think a perspective employer will say to that when she applies for a better position? Here is a go getter that gets things done and will do what she has to do. That low paying job that she once wouldn't even think of applying for is now a solid reference that shows her attitude, adaptability and will.
